2014 Alexandrina Farm Gate Festival links to the International Year of the Family Farmer and builds on past festivals success!

The International Year of Family Farming in 2014 will set the theme for the 3rd Biennial Alexandrina Farm Gate Festival.

“The Alexandrina Farm Gate Festival will bring together artists and farmers, young people, community groups and creative others to collaborate on gate-art works that will be displayed on farm gates around the Alexandrina region.” said Karyn Bradford Executive Officer of the Milang and District Community Association [MDCA] which has taken on the role of supporting the Community Committee which is developing the 2014 festival.

Karyn Bradford said “The Alexandrina Farm Gate Festival was developed and nurtured by Suzy Rex from Clayton Bay and Helen Stacey from Strathalbyn.  Together these two artistic entrepreneurs recognised the opportunity to use the arts to creatively illustrate the issues faced by rural communities during the drought.”

The initial Festival in 2010 explored and introduced the wider communities, particularly urban dwellers, to the creative and spiritual relationship landholders have with their ‘place’.  The festival showed this with humour, beauty, and confronting presentation of current issues from many different perspectives.

imageThe 2014 Festival will focus on the families of farmers who work the land and the natural creativity and innovation they generate.  This artistry will be captured by local artists who work with the landholders to express their experience of being on the land.  It is a 2 way conversation on what is happening behind the Gate and for the landholder what is beyond the Farm Gate. The Festival will build linkages across Alexandrina showcasing the importance of family farming to the region with Strathalbyn being the launch venue for the Festival next April.

The farm gate art will be developed in conjunction with local artists using a range of found/recycled materials and multimedia. Farm gate artworks could include discarded machinery parts, hay bales, timber, binder twine – in fact anything that comes to hand.  Some works may be ephemeral, that is, materials that will deteriorate in time, while other works may be more permanent in nature, such as welded metal. The farm gate journey will take visitors off the main roads and into the rural heartland of the Alexandrina Council region.

The next Farm Gate Festival in April/ May 2014 will carry on these traditions and continue to build the relationships between the country and the city…

If you are an artist, farmer, business or community organisation and would like to participate in the 2014 event then you are invited to attend an Info Session on Saturday 27th April at Milang Old School House Community Centre.

Until the end of June 2013 expressions of interest will be sought from landholders and artist wishing to participate in the next Festival with a view to matching artist and farm gates owners to prepare their creations.
